Further Action - Afghanistan

While the ACT Alliance helps to provide accommodation and supplies to displaced people within and in countries near Afghanistan, countries around the world must be ready to provide relief and safe haven. We believe Australia has the capacity to generously support displaced people and refugees, and provide additional aid.

We have been encouraged by the Australian government’s commitment to accept 3000 Afghan refugees, but believe that Australia has capacity to support more people, and provide a permanent home to refugees fleeing persecution, for as long as they need.

If you would like to add your voice to the call to accept additional refugees, and provide permanent protection to new and existing Afghanistan citizens in Australia, follow these steps.

Dear Minister

I am extremely concerned by the unfolding situation in Afghanistan, and the impacts on the people of that country. I am disturbed to hear that, at time of writing, almost 390,000 people have been newly displaced.

As a member of your electorate, I would like to voice my support of increasing the intake of refugees from Afghanistan to 20,000, and extending permanent protection to them and other Afghan people in Australia currently on temporary visas. I would also strongly encourage you to raise these issues with your party, and in Parliament.

These steps are consistent with Australia’s history of generous support for displaced people fleeing crisis situations, such as in 2015 in regards to the Syrian Refugee Crisis and the 1970s in regards to Vietnamese refugees. Australia is a generous country, and I hope you can continue this legacy.

Yours faithfully,
